About Houghton Brass
Houghton Brass are a long-established brass band from Houghton-le-Spring, with a history stretching back to the early 1980s. The group developed from the former Houghton Schools’ Band and has remained closely connected to the musical life of Sunderland and County Durham, combining community performances with a strong contesting tradition.
Across the years, Houghton Brass have performed at local festivals, civic events and major regional celebrations, while continuing to compete within the British brass-band movement. Their repertoire ranges from traditional brass-band favourites to modern arrangements, reflecting both the ensemble’s heritage and its commitment to keeping the format accessible to new audiences.
Houghton Brass and the North East
The band’s identity is rooted firmly in Houghton-le-Spring. Regular appearances around Sunderland, including major public events and community celebrations, have made Houghton Brass a familiar part of the city’s cultural landscape. Their continued activity gives the group an important place in the wider North East brass-band tradition.
