Isabel Maria is a Sunderland singer-songwriter and pianist whose alternative pop turns private thoughts into songs with sharp hooks and plenty of personality. She began writing on her grandfather’s old Casio keyboard before Sunderland’s Young Musicians Project helped turn those early ideas into material ready for an audience.
Her songs often deal with mental health, relationships, self-deprecation and the awkward details of growing up. Releases including Sixteen, Did I Deserve It?, Not Scared At All, Missing, Because I Care, Fairweather Friends and At Least We Don’t Have Kids show a writer who can make vulnerable subjects feel immediate without losing the melody.
Recognition has included BBC Introducing One to Watch in 2025, the North East Culture Award for Newcomer of the Year in 2024, the Alan Hull Award and a Northern Writers Award. BBC Radio 1 support has helped broaden her audience while Sunderland remains central to the story, both as the place where the music developed and the scene that first backed her.
