Jimmy Nail is a Newcastle-born singer, songwriter and actor whose music career has always carried a strong North East identity. Best known initially to many through television, he also built a successful recording career around a deep, unmistakable voice and songs that moved between rock, pop and more reflective balladry.

His breakthrough single Ain’t No Doubt reached number one in the UK in 1992, while later releases such as Crocodile Shoes and Big River became closely associated with the period when his music and acting careers were running side by side. The songs often draw on working-class life, relationships and the landscape of the North East without turning those subjects into caricature.

Nail’s connection with Newcastle has remained central throughout his work, whether through music, television or stage projects. That sense of place is one of the reasons his catalogue still resonates locally: the voice is instantly recognisable, but so is the world many of the songs come from.
