Northern Daughters and their Sunderland roots

Northern Daughters are a Sunderland-based six-piece girl band making bright, emotionally direct pop about the things that matter when you are growing up. The members first met through Inspire Stage School and had already spent years performing together before the band became a project in its own right. That shared history gives the group a natural chemistry, while their music is aimed squarely at young listeners dealing with friendship, confidence, anxiety, relationships, social-media pressure and learning to back themselves.

The band describe their sound around big feelings, big dreams and big singalongs, and that is a good fit for the way they present themselves. The songs are designed to be catchy, but the message matters too. Northern Daughters want their audience to feel understood rather than talked down to, keeping the writing positive without pretending that growing up is always straightforward.

Open Arms and a city-wide Sunderland moment

Their debut single Open Arms became a major early statement. Sunderland City Council commissioned the group to write, produce and perform the song as an anthem celebrating the city’s people, culture and energy. The project formed part of the wider One Big Summer programme around BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, with schools, community groups, businesses and residents invited to learn the chorus and join a large public performance in Keel Square.

The accompanying video was filmed in Sunderland, reinforcing the band’s connection to the city rather than treating the location as a backdrop. Open Arms centres on inclusion, friendship and having someone in your corner, themes that line up closely with the wider identity Northern Daughters are building.

Northern Daughters on the North East live circuit

The group made an early splash with a main-stage appearance at Sunderland’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, performing in front of thousands of people. Since then, their schedule has included Sunderland Food and Drink Festival, Summer Streets Festival, Stanhope Weekender, the North East Chamber Awards at The Glasshouse and further family and community events.

By summer 2026, the band’s online following had also grown rapidly, with millions of TikTok interactions helping introduce the group to audiences beyond the region. Even with that digital growth, the North East remains central to the project. Their development is supported by Sunderland-based I-Stage Group, while the members themselves come from Sunderland, Washington and Whitburn.

SoundBite North East includes Northern Daughters because they represent a genuinely new part of Sunderland’s pop story. They are still at the start of their recording career, but the combination of a clear message, strong local support and substantial live experience gives them a much firmer foundation than most new groups at the same stage.
