Pretentious and the Hartlepool alternative scene

Pretentious are a three-piece alternative rock band from Hartlepool, with a sound that leans into melody as much as guitar weight. The band cite artists including Pixies, Weezer and Green Day among the reference points around their music, while their own material mixes alternative-rock riffs, sudden changes in pace and vocal harmonies with a slightly nostalgic pop edge.

The monthly series is built specifically around North East artists, so it gives Pretentious a chance to play outside their Hartlepool base while staying firmly within the regional circuit.

That mixed bill suits the band. Suspirium bring grungier guitar textures and saxophone, Zeta Point push towards electronic power-pop, while Pretentious sit in a more direct alternative-rock space. It should make the differences between the three acts clearer rather than asking three similar bands to compete for the same ground.
