Sam Shields is an Ovingham singer-songwriter whose music takes Americana and folk and brings it firmly back to the North East. Rather than leaning on borrowed Nashville imagery, his songs feel rooted in local storytelling, family memories, social history and the sort of detail that makes a lyric feel lived-in.
His catalogue includes Transfer Market, the 2025 Farewell & Godspeed EP and singles including Flint, The Sound of the Rain and his version of Bob Dylan’s You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go. Songs such as Penny’s Daughter, Wasting My Time and Mother Nature show how naturally he blends traditional folk storytelling with Americana looseness and a distinctly northern delivery.
Shields is equally comfortable playing solo or with The Regiment, where bass, keys and fiddle give the songs a fuller roots sound. He has become a familiar name around North East grassroots venues and also performs with Emma Robson, bringing harmony, harmonica and reworked arrangements to each other’s material.
