The Fever Kings and their North East roots

The Fever Kings are a North East alternative-rock four-piece whose sound mixes the melodic pull of 2000s rock with heavier dynamics and a modern sense of scale. The band came together in the aftermath of the COVID lockdowns, with Jack Songer on guitar and vocals, Thomas Myerscough on keys and synths, Alex Brown on bass and Chris Gilks on drums. Since January 2022, they have been shaping songs built around big choruses, emotionally direct writing and the kind of shifts between quiet and loud that make the material feel made for a live room.

Influences including Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro, Jimmy Eat World and Lifehouse are easy to hear in the band’s approach, particularly in the balance between softer passages and heavier melodic peaks. However, The Fever Kings are at their best when those influences sit in the background and the songs lean into the group’s own strengths: clear hooks, warm vocals and arrangements that know when to pull back before pushing forward again.

Rise & Fall and a growing catalogue

The band’s debut EP, Rise & Fall, gave that sound a clearer shape. Its central idea reflects the ups and downs that come with trying to move forward, and the music mirrors that theme by moving between reflective sections and more anthemic moments. Earlier singles helped build momentum before the EP arrived, including one track that spent two weeks at number one on an independent music chart in the Netherlands.

That wider response has not pulled the band away from their North East identity. Instead, the group have used regional shows as a base while gradually expanding their reach. Their first UK tour stretched across several cities before finishing with a hometown headline show in Newcastle, while other appearances have included support slots and festival dates further afield.

Newcastle remains an important part of The Fever Kings’ story. The band have played venues including The Cluny and have continued to appear on North East bills alongside other emerging alternative-rock acts. SoundBite North East has featured them through Veritas Festival coverage, placing the group firmly within the region’s current grassroots rock scene.

There is a familiar warmth to The Fever Kings’ music, particularly for listeners who grew up around melodic alternative rock, but the band are not simply leaning on nostalgia. Their synth textures, dynamic arrangements and emotionally open writing give the songs a contemporary edge. With a settled four-piece line-up, a debut EP behind them and a growing live reputation, The Fever Kings have the foundations to keep pushing beyond the North East while retaining the Newcastle connection that has helped shape the band so far.
