The Welfare Collective

The Welfare Collective are a North East folk-rooted ensemble whose music draws on the brass tradition and industrial heritage of the Durham coalfield. Their sound sits naturally between traditional song and community music, bringing together voices and instrumentation in a way that feels closely connected to the region’s history.

That background gives the group a strong sense of place without reducing the music to heritage presentation. Folk melody and brass colour are used as living parts of the arrangement, carrying stories and themes that remain connected to communities shaped by mining, work and collective identity.

In September 2026 The Welfare Collective appear at Durham Folk Festival’s closing concert at Redhills Durham Miners Hall alongside The Wilson Family and Benny Graham. It is a fitting setting for a group whose music is so closely tied to the sound and social history of the Durham coalfield.
