The Wilson Family are one of the North East’s most respected folk groups, with a history stretching back to the early 1970s in Billingham on Teesside. Built around the voices of the Wilson siblings, the group became known for powerful unaccompanied harmony singing and a repertoire that draws deeply on traditional song, social history and the industrial culture of the region.

The family originally performed as a six-part a cappella group, with sister Pat alongside brothers Tom, Chris, Steve, Ken and Mike. Over the years the line-up has changed, but the defining sound has remained the same: close family harmonies delivered without instrumental backing, giving the words and the natural blend of the voices nowhere to hide.

More than 50 years of North East folk music

The Wilson Family have been singing together since 1974 and became a major part of the British folk-club circuit. Their roots in Teesside shaped much of the material they chose, particularly songs linked to local communities, working life and the writing of North East songwriters. Their 1983 album Horumarye was devoted to the songs of Graeme Miles, whose writing captured the landscapes, industries and people of Teesside and Cleveland.

That connection to local song has helped make The Wilson Family a benchmark for unaccompanied singing in the region. Their style is not about flashy arrangement. The power comes from the way the voices lock together, building harmonies that feel instinctive because they have been shaped through decades of singing as a family.

From Billingham to major international stages

The group’s reputation has taken them well beyond the North East. They have appeared at major folk festivals across the UK and Europe, performed at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms and worked with Sting, including appearances connected to The Last Ship. Even with that wider profile, their identity has remained firmly tied to Teesside.

In 2017, The Wilson Family received the English Folk Dance and Song Society Gold Badge, the organisation’s highest honour, recognising their long contribution to traditional music. More recent releases, including Sibling Revivalry, have shown that the group’s repertoire continues to develop rather than simply repeating old favourites.
