Harris began developing Boomerang Town in 2016, during a period marked by the deaths of several musicians close to her and growing political division in the United States. Raised in a small town outside Waco, Texas, she also found herself reconsidering the relationship between the values of her upbringing, her recovery and her own connection to faith. The resulting songs do not separate personal experience from the wider world around it.

Addiction and grief run through parts of the record, yet the writing keeps reaching towards hope rather than presenting darkness as an endpoint. That tension gives the material its pull. Love and loss sit close together, and Harris uses the detail of individual lives to look at the forces that keep people tied to places, habits and histories. In Cluny 2, those narratives should have the space to land without the distance of a larger hall.
