Steve Reich is one of the defining composers of modern minimalism, known for music built from repetition, shifting patterns and the gradual transformation of rhythm. His work has had an enormous influence well beyond contemporary classical music, reaching into electronic music, ambient, post-rock and experimental pop.

Pieces such as Music for 18 Musicians, Drumming, Different Trains and Clapping Music show how Reich can create movement from the smallest changes. Rather than relying on traditional dramatic development, his compositions often let rhythm and harmony evolve almost imperceptibly, making the listening experience feel both precise and hypnotic.

That influence remains especially clear in live performance, where the physical side of the music becomes impossible to miss. Repeated figures pass between players, patterns lock together and then shift apart, turning what can look mathematically exact on the page into something immediate, human and surprisingly visceral in the room.
