John Hackett Band Newcastle brings Red Institution to Ouseburn
The Cluny show follows the release of Red Institution, an album the band describes as the result of a decade of growing together and blending very different writing and playing styles. Released in 2025, the record moves between classical, jazz, rock, funk, pop and folk while trying to capture the same contrast between quiet passages and more urgent instrumental sections that shapes the live show.
Hackett remains best known to many listeners for his flute work with his brother Steve Hackett on albums including Voyage of the Acolyte, Please Don’t Touch and Spectral Mornings, but the current band is very much its own project. Nick Fletcher handles lead guitar, Jeremy Richardson moves between bass, vocals, keyboards and guitars, while Duncan Parsons brings drums and synths into the arrangements.
That range explains why the group can move from pastoral flute textures into heavier progressive-rock passages without the set feeling tied to one era of the genre. Red Institution was built around exactly that breadth, so the Newcastle date has a current album to draw from rather than functioning purely as a retrospective show.
EBB make the pairing more interesting again. Their own progressive approach is theatrical and eclectic, giving the evening the feel of a genuine two-band programme rather than a headline act followed by an unrelated opener.
The Cluny’s main room should suit both groups because the audience remains close enough to hear the detail in the arrangements, while the PA can still give the heavier sections proper weight.
