OGREPALOOZA at The Point Sunderland
Ogrepalooza brings The Ogretones, DJ Boo-urns, fancy dress and a Shrek-themed party to The Point Sunderland on Friday 9 October from 7:30pm.
Ogrepalooza is easily one of the stranger dates in The Point Sunderland’s autumn diary, and that is exactly the point. On Friday 9 October, the night turns towards Shrek, live music and a full-costume party built around The Ogretones, an eight-piece tribute band featuring Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and friends.

The music goes well beyond the obvious soundtrack jokes. Songs associated with Smash Mouth, Counting Crows, Ricky Martin, The Proclaimers, Bonnie Tyler, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin and Buzzcocks all feed into the set. That gives the night more of a pop-culture party feel than a narrow tribute show, with enough variety to keep the room moving after the novelty wears off.

DJ Boo-urns is also on the bill, covering the gaps around the live band and keeping the theme running across the night. Fancy dress is encouraged and prizes are planned for the best outfits, so this is one event where arriving in ordinary Friday-night clothes may leave you feeling underdressed.
The event starts at 7:30pm and is ticketed. Unlike the free Live Lounge band nights, Ogrepalooza is a larger themed production with several moving parts: live band, DJ, characters, costumes and audience participation all form part of the same night.
A tribute night with its own identity
The strongest part of the idea is that it does not rely on one joke. The Ogretones have a full eight-piece line-up, the song list is broad, and the event is designed around people joining in rather than watching passively. If the Shrek theme gets you through the door, the live music should do the rest.
