SwanNek Freight Island Newcastle brings one of the city’s most distinctive contemporary jazz collectives into the Plant Room on Thursday 24 September 2026. The band are listed for a one-hour live slot from 8.15pm to 9.15pm as part of Freight Island’s new programme of Thursday performances.

SwanNek have spent the last few years developing a sound that moves beyond a conventional small jazz group. The current line-up brings vocals, tenor saxophone, guitar, cello, keyboards, bass and drums together, giving the music room to shift between intimate passages, heavier rhythmic sections and wider ensemble arrangements.
SwanNek were selected for Jazz North’s Northern Line 2026-27 programme, giving this Newcastle date extra weight as the collective moves into a wider touring phase. That selection places the band alongside a small group of Northern artists receiving support for touring and audience development, so the Freight Island appearance lands at a useful point in their progression rather than feeling like an isolated local booking.
The group’s Newcastle identity remains central to the project. SwanNek build their music around the people and places closest to them, using contemporary jazz as a starting point for something more personal and emotionally direct. Earlier releases including Lucid Dreams, Beautiful Sunday and debut EP At What Cost? have helped establish that approach.
Freight Island gives the band a very different setting from a dedicated jazz room. The Plant Room sits inside a large food, drink and music space in the city centre, so this shorter evening slot can put SwanNek in front of people who might not otherwise arrive specifically for a jazz show. That crossover is part of what makes the booking interesting.
