Royal Northern Sinfonia

Royal Northern Sinfonia is one of the North East’s most important musical institutions, with a history stretching back to 1958. Founded in Newcastle upon Tyne and now resident at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music in Gateshead, the orchestra has spent decades bringing chamber music, orchestral repertoire and new commissions to audiences across the region and beyond.

The ensemble’s programmes range from Baroque and Classical repertoire through twentieth-century works, contemporary commissions and collaborations outside the traditional concert-hall mould. That flexibility has helped Royal Northern Sinfonia remain relevant to changing audiences while maintaining the precision and character expected from a chamber orchestra with an international reputation.

The orchestra’s identity is inseparable from the North East. Its home at The Glasshouse places it at the centre of one of the region’s major cultural venues, while performances across Newcastle, Middlesbrough and elsewhere keep the ensemble connected to audiences throughout the area rather than limiting it to a single stage.
