Newcastle’s Nano Kino play a hometown show at The Cluny on Monday 19 October 2026, bringing one of the more distinctive sounds currently coming out of the city’s alternative scene back to Ouseburn.

Sarah Suri, Duncan Lloyd, Tom English and Phil Morgan draw from dream-pop, post-punk, alternative guitar music and electronic textures, with influences ranging from Cocteau Twins and Life Without Buildings to Women and late-1980s house music. On paper that is quite a mixture. In practice, Nano Kino make it feel much less complicated.

There is atmosphere in the band’s music, but it isn’t simply there to create a hazy backdrop. Guitars, electronics and a strong rhythm section give the songs something firmer underneath, allowing Nano Kino to move between more spacious passages and moments with considerably more drive.

That makes this an interesting hometown date. Newcastle’s current music scene is often discussed through its indie and guitar bands, but Nano Kino sit slightly to one side of the more obvious version of that sound. They are still very much a Newcastle band, just one drawing from a wider set of reference points.

The Cluny is also familiar territory for local audiences, and a Monday-night hometown show offers a different proposition from catching the band as one name on a larger bill. There is more room here for the details in the material to come through and for listeners who only know a track or two to get a fuller sense of what Nano Kino are doing.

For SoundBite, that’s what makes this one worth picking out from a busy October programme: not simply that they are local, but that they show another side of what North East alternative music currently sounds like.
